Sherwood Park News Interview

Please provide a brief summary of your experience.

I grew up in Sherwood Park, and after completing my studies at the University of Alberta I spent over 16 years as an Infantry Officer with the Canadian Armed Forces, serving with Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. That experience gave me some guiding values: I believe in service before self and that all people deserve dignity and respect. I have the benefit of years of leadership experience, governance, and often built teams from groups of strangers to work towards a common goal. For many years I specialized in critical analysis and strategic planning, and have experience in risk management and financial planning. Overall, I have a fair share of transferable skills, and the motivation to help this community excel, as I plan to live here for the long term.

Why are you passionate about local education?

I volunteered with the Committee of School Councils over the last year and witnessed a team that I wanted to be a part of. I engaged with teachers, administration, and parents/guardians who truly care about the success of our students. After seeing many experienced trustees move on to new adventures and not seek re-election, I saw an opportunity to step up and add my skills and experience to EIPS. I believe public education is crucially important, both to give our students the tools for success, and to support a bright future for our community. My time with School Council educated me on the current state of our public education system, and concerns we can anticipate. I have two children with EIPS and am committed to enabling a high-quality and supportive learning environment for them, their peers, and future students.

Why should voters elect you to the EIPS board of trustees?
I have unique skills and experience that will be a useful addition to the team. I will bring a calm and analytical approach to all my duties as a trustee. I have an open mind and believe that all factors and perspectives need to be included to come to a proper decision. I cannot and will not make campaign promises that I don’t have the power to guarantee. But the promise I will make is that I will always be willing to listen to anyone's perspective, concerns, or suggestions. I will always include the information I've gathered in the decision-making process, and I will always be willing to explain why the board made its decisions. My personal leadership style demands a mutual-respect environment, the maintenance of trust and credibility, and integrity through transparency. I look forward to the prospect of working with my fellow trustee candidates and EIPS staff.
